An uncommon first-hand account of London's criminal courts, written by H. L. Cancellor, Magistrate of the Marlborough Street Police Court.
Published in 1930, The Life of a London Beak takes its title from the old British slang term for a magistrate or judge. Cancellor recounts memorable cases, criminals and characters encountered during his career, providing a fascinating glimpse into London's policing, courts and everyday life.
His recollections include the First World War, with descriptions of German air raids, bombings and the difficulties of administering justice in wartime London.
The volume is illustrated throughout with photographic portraits and contemporary courtroom caricatures.
Ernest H. Shackleton
A particularly intriguing feature is a printed ownership label to the front pastedown reading:
"Ernest H. Shackleton."
The identity of this former owner remains unknown. Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton died in 1922, eight years before this book was published, so no direct connection to the famous Antarctic explorer is claimed.
Condition
Original dark blue cloth with gilt spine lettering. Rubbing, marking and general wear to the binding, with scattered foxing and spotting internally. Illustrated and photographic plates remain attractive.
Please examine the photographs carefully
An unusual piece of London criminal, legal and social history, made particularly interesting by its unexplained Shackleton ownership label.
