Gregorian Psalter 5th Edition C. 1900s, St Mary Clumber Chaplain's Stall

Arthur Henry Brown

Arthur Henry Brown was one of the foremost church musicians of the Victorian era. A prolific composer of hymn tunes and liturgical music, he became closely associated with the revival of Gregorian chant within the Church of England.

Brown believed that medieval plainsong represented the most authentic form of Christian worship and devoted much of his career to adapting ancient melodies for English congregations. His hymn tunes remain in use today, while his chant books became standard references in many High Church parishes during the late nineteenth century.

St Mary's Church, Clumber

The association with St Mary's Church, Clumber Park is one of this volume's most attractive features.

Built during the nineteenth century for the Dukes of Newcastle, St Mary's became renowned for its magnificent Gothic architecture, elaborate liturgy, and exceptional choral tradition. As part of the Anglo-Catholic revival within the Church of England, music formed an essential part of worship, and books such as this would have been used daily by clergy and choir.

The gilt binding and repeated ownership label strongly suggest this volume formed part of the church's original liturgical library, making it a tangible survivor of Victorian ecclesiastical life.

Historical Context

During the nineteenth century, the Oxford Movement transformed Anglican worship by encouraging a renewed appreciation of the Church's medieval heritage. Churches across Britain restored ancient ceremonial, vestments, architecture, and music that had largely disappeared following the Reformation.

Gregorian chant experienced a remarkable revival during this period. Condition

Bound in its original red leather with gilt decoration and lettering.

The binding remains sound with light rubbing and wear to the extremities, consistent with regular ecclesiastical use. Internally the pages remain remarkably clean with only occasional light foxing and handling marks. The decorative marbled endpapers remain attractive, while the original church ownership label is present on the front pastedown.

Overall a very well-preserved example of a working Victorian church service book.
