London: Vizetelly & Co., 1882
First Edition | Complete in Two Volumes | Nearly 400 Engravings

A handsome first edition of George Augustus Sala's America Revisited: From the Bay of New York to the Gulf of Mexico, and from Lake Michigan to the Pacific, published in 1882.

Sala, a prominent Victorian journalist and contributor to Charles Dickens's periodicals, travelled extensively across the United States, recording American cities, customs, transport and everyday life. Having previously visited during the American Civil War, Sala returned to find a country transformed by Reconstruction, industrialisation and rapid expansion.

The work is richly illustrated with nearly 400 engravings, including views of New York, New Orleans during Carnival, transatlantic travel, railways, hotels, street scenes and American social life, creating a fascinating visual record of Gilded Age America.

Binding & Condition

Attractively rebound in red half leather over marbled boards, with leather corners, gilt spine rules and gilt titles.

Both volumes are structurally sound and present well. Some rubbing and general shelf wear to the bindings. Internally there is scattered foxing, spotting and toning, with occasional minor marginal wear and small tears consistent with age. Illustrations generally remain clean and well preserved.

Please examine the photographs carefully as they form part of the condition description.
