Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra
George Routledge and Sons, London & New York, 1866
Translated by Charles Jarvis
An attractive Victorian edition of Cervantes' Don Quixote, published by George Routledge and Sons in 1866 and retaining its original green publisher's cloth binding.
This edition uses the celebrated Charles Jarvis translation, first published in 1742 and one of the standard English translations of Cervantes throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Illustrations
Illustrated with full-page plates designed by prominent Victorian artist Sir John Gilbert and engraved by the renowned Dalziel Brothers, one of the most important wood-engraving firms of Victorian Britain.
Binding & Condition
Bound in the original green publisher's cloth, with blind-stamped borders and central device to the boards. Gilt title to the spine with Routledge at the foot.
The binding shows rubbing, fading and general age-related wear. The text block is detached from the binding with the inner hinges failed, although the original boards and spine remain together. Internally there is occasional spotting, toning and handling wear.
Please examine the photographs carefully.
