Le Nouveau Testament de Notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ
Geneva: G. J. Manget, An X [1802]
An attractive French Protestant New Testament printed in Geneva in 1802, revised and approved by the pastors and professors of the Church and Academy of Geneva.
The title page is unusually dated both “An X”, Year Ten of the French Republican Calendar, and 1802. At the time of publication, Geneva had been annexed by Revolutionary France, making this an interesting survivor from the Revolutionary and early Napoleonic period.
Opposite the opening text is a copyright notice warning against counterfeit editions, beneath which appears the manuscript authentication signature of publisher G. J. Manget.
The book retains its attractive period leather and speckled-paper prize binding. A red gilt label on the front reads:
CLASSE DU MATIN
4e PRIX D'EXAMEN
PERNETTE GRANGER
The volume was therefore apparently awarded to Pernette Granger as an examination prize, giving this copy particularly charming contemporary provenance.
Internally the New Testament extends to 706 numbered pages, with decorative ornaments, chapter summaries and extensive biblical references.
Condition: Good antiquarian condition. General rubbing, spotting and wear to the binding, with wear and cracking to the leather consistent with age. Internally generally clean and well preserved with occasional spotting, toning and handling marks. Please examine the photographs carefully for condition.
An appealing 224-year-old Genevan New Testament combining Revolutionary-era history, publisher authentication and named prize provenance.
