An early 1703 English biblical history, The History of the Old and New Testament, Extracted out of Sacred Scripture and Writings of the Fathers, attributed to Nicolas Fontaine, Sieur de Royaumont.
This is the Third Edition, Corrected, published in London during the reign of Queen Anne. Rather than a conventional Bible, the work presents the events of the Old and New Testaments chronologically, combining biblical narratives with historical and theological commentary, together with accounts of the lives and travels of the Apostles.
The attractive title page is printed in red and black and advertises an impressive series of 234 engraved illustrations (“Sculptures”) and three maps. Unfortunately, these illustrations and maps were removed from this copy at some point in its history, and the volume is therefore substantially incomplete.
Bound in later calf with gilt decoration and lettering to the spine and striking red-coloured page edges. The binding is worn, with the front board substantially separated and requiring attention. The title page has undergone historic paper repairs, with further age-related wear, toning, staining and occasional repairs throughout.
Despite its incomplete state, an interesting and affordable example of an early 18th-century English biblical history, now over 320 years old.
